Free Choice Blog 3

Hello It is great to be blogging again! This is my third FCB and it means that I am over halfway finished with the course. So I get to chose whatever I want to read except the types I have already done. I have decided to read a short story. The story I decided to read is A Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allen Poe. It was written in 1843. I am to answer these questions for the assignment:

What was your personal reaction to this reading selection?

I am not too sure how to react. I wasn't expecting this story to go along with the title. Throughout reading the story I thought "This guy is crazy". I was speaking of the character narrating the story. Throughout the story the character was telling details to prove he wasn't mad, but as he explained it seemed to prove his insanity. In the end it all came together and I was able to understand why the story was called "a tell-tale heart".

What do you believe the author’s intent was, and what patterns of organization did you observe?

I believe the author's intent was to have an effect on his readers. This short story is a little like a psychological thriller told on a first person basis. He could have also intended to show how doing something bad, like killing someone, can stick in your conscience and bother you until you resolve the issue.
I believe most writing consists of a little of most of the patterns of organization. The author used cause and effect in the story. He also used comparison/contrast in describing things in the story.

I enjoyed reading this short story. I haven't really read much by Edgar Allen Poe. His writing is quite interesting. I think I may read more of his work in the future.
That wraps up this Free Choice blog. Thanks for reading!
